Dr. Mooney provides therapeutic services for children and adolescents for concerns including:

*Dr. Mooney provides affirming care for LGBTQ+ youth and their families. She does not engage in or condone the use of conversion or reparative therapies as these have been proven harmful to people and are not founded in scientific knowledge.

Megan A. Mooney, PhD

Dr. Megan A. Mooney (she/her/hers) is a licensed psychologist who has focused on serving children and families for over 18 years. She has presented locally and nationally about trauma, treatments for trauma in children and families, and ways to prevent and treat trauma in LGBTQ+ youth. She is an affiliate member of the National Child Traumatic Stress Network. She is a member of the clinical faculty with Baylor College of Medicine and adjunct faculty with the University of Texas Health Sciences Center at Houston.


Dr. Mooney’s undergraduate degree is from Vanderbilt University and her doctorate degree is from the University of Arkansas. She completed her internship in professional psychology with the Baylor College of Medicine Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. Dr. Mooney has worked with youth and families in community clinics, schools, psychiatric and medical hospitals, residential treatment centers, homeless shelters, and crisis situations. She has experience collaborating with juvenile justice, child welfare, and educational systems to serve her clients and the greater community.


Dr. Mooney is a Licensed Psychologist with the Texas State Board of Examiners of Psychologists (TX License #33819; Expires July, 2023).     POST TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER

    Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a condition where an individual is recovering from a terrifying event. People can experience nightmares or unwanted memories of the event. However, symptoms can be managed with trauma-focused psychotherapy and medication.

    ANXIETY

    Anxiety is normal. It’s a function that we all have. However, it can be overwhelming at times and prevent you from living your life.

    DEPRESSION

    It’s okay to feel sad, that’s normal. Although depression can feel like a weight that prevents you from accomplishing daily tasks, it can go on for a while before that weight is lifted. Depression on a surface level is a persistent depressed mood or loss of interest in activities that you typically enjoy.

    ADHD

    Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder is a chronic condition. Those with ADHD are typically more impulsive and have limited attention. However, these symptoms can be managed with medication and talk therapy.

    How long is a therapy session?

    Typically, my therapy sessions last about 50min.

    How long should I go to therapy?

    This depends on the person. Some people only need therapy for a few months while others need to attend therapy for years. Each individual is different, and It’s my mission to help my clients eventually leave therapy and live a life without needing it.

    How often should I go to therapy?

    This is different from person to person. Typically, people attend therapy once a week. However, for those who have been going to therapy for a while, they might only come in once a month. While those who are in more severe circumstances attend twice a week.
